Animate Inanimate

Made while living in Jabalpur, central India, in 2014, these photographs emerged alongside my painting and drawing practice. They observe the ordinary theatre of the street—its people, animals, gestures, colour and passing dramas—where the pictorial concerns of painting began to quietly enter the photographic frame.

Taken before the pandemic, they are also personal records of a particular time and place: images made from the perspective of an immersed outsider, trying to bear witness to the life unfolding around me.
